OSI supply a variety of products for use in representing height and ground relief. Available as Contour tiles, Digital Terrain Models and also LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) high accuracy datasets.

There are 250 tiles in the Contour and DTM series (Republic of Ireland). Additional tiles produced by Land & Property Services (formerly Ordnance Survey NI) are available for Northern Ireland.  Each tile covers a ground area of 20km x 20km, and all are available in Irish Grid (IG) or ITM Irish Transverse Mercator (ITM) and in vector and raster formats.

LiDAR is a remote sensing technology that uses laser scanning to collect height or elevation data. Our LiDAR data is supplied in Irish Grid (IG) and Irish Transverse Mercator (ITM) in ASCll file format, with postings of 2m (although this is not exclusively the case) and a minimum vertical accuracy of 25cm. The final outputs from the point cloud are either a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) or a Digital Surface Model (DSM). For technical reasons, LiDAR data may not be available in all areas of the country.

Bord Na Móna is Ireland’s leading environmentally responsible integrated utility service provider, encompassing electricity, heating, resource recovery, water, growing media and related services. They make extensive use of OSi digital mapping and air flown orthophotography and Lidar imagery for the planning and management of their peat and bog resources. Bord Na Mona has 80,000 Hectares of bog and the use of GI technology helps them to improve bog management logistics and peat transport.

OSi’s Lidar mapping allows Bord Na Mona to create strategic plans for the management of the remaining bog resources and plan the development of new sustainable products and services in the future.
