Grafton Street Tops OSi's online poll
Grafton Street has been chosen by Facebook and Twitter users as their favourite street in a competition organised by Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) to mark the launch of the new OSi Dublin Street Guide.
Over 3,000 people visited the ‘Favourite Dublin Street’ page on Facebook and were asked to nominate their favourite Dublin Street. People could also enter a competition to reflect an image of Dublin with either an essay or a photo.
The clear favourite street nominated was Grafton Street. In the photo/essay competition, a night-time shot of an illuminated Croke Park and its surrounding streets by Daithi Galvin was the clear winner.
The new Dublin Street Guide underlines the recent changes in the Dublin streetscape, including such new landmarks as the Dublin Convention Centre, the Grand Canal Theatre and the Aviva Stadium.
There have also been many changes in the city’s transport infrastructure, including the extension of the Luas to the O2 Venue, the Dublin Bike stations and the Samuel Beckett Bridge.
The OSi Dublin Street Guide has a circulation of nearly 100,000. The updated Guide has an RRP of €9.99, a substantial reduction from the previous price of €12.50.
The new Dublin Street Guide was launched in the Mansion House by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr. Emer Costello on Thursday 10th june 2010. To mark the occasion, the Lord Mayor was presented with a framed aerial photo of the Mansion House today along with an historic OSi 1830 map of the Mansion House and its environs.
Speaking at the launch, Ms Geraldine Ruane, OSi Chief Executive, said: “OSi is delighted to publish the new Dublin Street Guide because we know how popular and useful it is for both Dubliners and tourists alike as well, of course, as important service providers such as the Fire Brigade and ambulance service, the Gardai and taxi drivers.
“It was important for us to update the Dublin Street Guide because Dublin has changed so much recently with the completion of major new landmark developments such as the National Conference Centre and the Grand Canal Theatre and infrastructure such as the new Samuel Beckett Bridge and Luas extensions. OSi is happy to play its part to support our tourist industry and we hope the new Dublin Street Guide will prove as popular as ever.”
