Tourism

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and geographic data are becomingly increasingly important in the context of the tourism industry, helping to manage the complex environment in which tourism activity occurs.

A GIS can be used to map accommodation, attractions, transport networks, tourist offices, tour operators etc. It can help answer questions about where visitors come from and what attracts them to our shores. It can assist in the identification and development of new tourist activates, for example, planning new walking routes, and the  accommodation and amenities needed to ensure they are viable and self-sustaining.

A GIS can assist with efficient resource planning and visualisation of tourist information, it can be used to show the location, type and timing of events. It can also create multiple outputs for the tourist and the event manager, including paper maps or digital information via kiosks in Tourist Offices or over the web.

Ordnance Survey Ireland data and products play a very important role in this, giving the industry a current context against which to analyse and display their own data.
