OSi and Enterprise Ireland Workshop entitled “Emerging Technologies and Business Opportunities in the Location Services Market”
100 Irish SME's attended a half day seminar organised by Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) and Enterprise Ireland on May 10th to look at the opportunities posed by the fast moving Location Based Services (LBS) market. An international panel of speaker’s addressed the seminar. The initative was taken by OSi and Enterprise Ireland to determine the level of interest from Irish entrepreneurs in this area.
LBS services uses location or geographic information to deliver a service to a mobile customer. The seminar was addressed by the following keynote speakers:
- Ludovic Privat, Editor, GPS Business News.com
- Jonathan Raper, Founder of Placr and Professor at the giCentre City University London.
- Dr Mícheál Ó Foghlú, CTO of FeedHenry Ltd. and Director Research at the TSSG in Waterford Institute of Technology.
- John Caulfield, Solutions Director, Oracle Ireland.
- Alan Gormley, Business Advisory, SAS Ireland.
Ms Geraldine Ruane CEO of OSi told the conference that this fast moving emerging market could be worth some $14 billion by 2014 and Irish SMEs were well placed to exploit this market. Ms Ruane commented “
we are greatly encouraged by the feedback from participants and as a result we are actively looking at ways to assist Irish start ups in this area. OSi has a very strong track record in IT and location data management. We will be organising a more intensive workshop for a number of SME's at OSi in the near future to help them develop more specific geo-spatial knowledge. We are also in discussions with Enterprise Ireland as to how best to help SME's in the longer term. We are actively considering with Enterprise Ireland mentoring a number of specific start up LBS businesses and possibly developing an incubation unit for SME's at our head office in the Phoenix Park to assist them”.
