Waterways Ireland

Introduction

Waterways Ireland is one of the two North/South Implementation Bodies that are co-sponsored by the Department of Community Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs in the South and the Department of Culture, Arts & Leisure in the North.

Waterways Ireland has responsibility for approx. 1000km of navigable inland waterways North and South. This includes responsibility for the management, maintenance, development, and restoration of the inland navigable waterway system throughout the island, principally for recreational purposes, and of the possible restoration and development of the Ulster Canal.

Project Summary

Waterways Ireland use OSi digital mapping and orthophotography for the planning, management and development of the navigable waters under their remit. Spatial data supplied by OSi assists Waterways Ireland to record and monitor water quality throughout the canal system and the monitoring of fish stocks by species and by location.

Waterways Ireland also use OSi spatial data to create specialist waterways maps for the tourist market. These can be viewed on the Waterways Ireland website at www.waterwaysireland.org.

• High and low level imagery and orthophotography.
• Height models and Lidar models.
